Nicknames, explained by people who actually use them

Find the Perfect Nickname — For a Name, a Friend, or Yourself

We collect and explain nicknames the way people actually give them — a shortened name a grandmother started using, a locker-room label that stuck, a pet name that turned into an inside joke. Every list on this site is written and checked by our small editorial team before it’s published, and we update pages when readers point out ones we missed.

Browse Nicknames by Category

Ten categories, each built around how nicknames actually come up in real life — not just alphabetical lists.

How We Put These Lists Together

Every category page starts as a working list, gets trimmed of duplicates and anything that doesn’t actually get used, and is reviewed by a second person on our team before it goes live. Where a nickname has a real backstory — a nod to a place, a language, or an event — we explain it instead of just listing the word. If you’ve heard a version we haven’t covered, you can suggest it through the contact page and we’ll look into adding it.
