Three People, One Very Long Google Doc of Nicknames
ClassicNicknames started as a running list one of us kept for years — nicknames overheard at family gatherings, in group chats, on sports commentary, in old movies. Eventually the list got long enough that it seemed silly to keep it to ourselves, so we cleaned it up, split it into categories, and put it online.
How This Site Actually Started
None of us have a linguistics degree, and we’re not trying to pretend otherwise. What we do have is a habit of noticing names — why a “Robert” becomes “Bobby” in one family and “Rob” in another, why certain athletes get a nickname that outlives their actual name, why some pet names for a partner are sweet and others are, frankly, a little much.
That noticing turned into notes, the notes turned into spreadsheets, and the spreadsheets turned into this site. It’s still run the same way it started: informally, by people who like this stuff, not by a content team assigning keywords.
How We Decide What Goes on a List
Every category page goes through the same rough process: draft the list from real usage (not a thesaurus), cut anything that’s a duplicate or just doesn’t get used, add context for nicknames that have an actual story behind them, and have a second person on the team read it before it’s published.
- We keep it real If a nickname isn’t actually used anywhere, it doesn’t make the list just to pad it out.
- We explain the “why” Where a nickname has a real origin story, we write it instead of leaving a bare word.
- We fix mistakes Readers flag things we got wrong or missed, and we update pages — this isn’t a “set once” site.
